If you're not a local, then you have to paddle to the shoulder. I'm a Marine and in early October, the ship I'm on deployment with ported at the Navy Base. I'll be the first to admit it, Marines are gay. So when we hit port, it's gets stupid. Lucky for me my cousin lives there so I didn't have to hang out with any of them. I read on the internet that there's a break called ricks reef. My cousin picked me up from the ship and she dropped me off in front of the Sheraton. I didn't know where the hell the beach was so I walked around the hotel with a surfboard feeling stupid but determined. I saw 2 guys with bodyboards and asked them "where's the beach where you can surf" and they just said "follow us." It was the coolest thing because everything I read about surf in
Guam was tainted by heavy Localism. I followed them up the hill and around the corner at it was going off. There's a beautiful view from the pool and there's a bar there, too. Unless you're staying at the hotel, they'll only take cash. I brought my own bottle of Bacardi. I put on the sunblock (because I'm a Hawley) and paddled out. At one point I was surfing with no one else in the water. I surfed there until the tide dropped and paddled in. If you surf goofy, you'll be disappointed because they're all rights. I spent the rest of the day relaxing on the rocks and loving life. Don't think there's not locals there who'll beat you up. The only people in the water were 3 bodyboarders. I saw two Navy guys paddle out to the inside of the wave. They came back bitching because the guys told them to get off there waves and get out of the water. One of them even came up to me and said " let me tell you something, when a local tells you to do something, you F^%Ing do it." and I didn't do anything to the guy. I told him right on. The he told me to get my sh*t out of his way because I was sitting on a trail of stairs. I did. I had no reason to talk back. There's a surf instructor there named John, he's a cool guy. I think he works for the hotel. I'd suggest you hire him if you don't want to catch any flak. I went back out as soon as they left and surf the break until sunset. My cousin was supposed to pick me up at 7 so I had time to chill before she got there. I was putting on a change of clothes and a couple of locals came down there and introduced themselves. I told them my name and story and they asked me if I smoked weed. I didn't know the customs so I asked them if it was illegal. They said yes and asked if I wanted to smoke. I told them hell yeah. I went to the bar and had me some cold Rolling Rocks and waited to get picked up. My time in Guam was so much fun. I got to visit with family, surf, get a little wasted, and it was like I never left California. Guam is one of a kind, but like any place, bad things can happen. If your looking for good surf then Guam has it, just be respectful, and stay out of the way.
